Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Shucker's

Shucker's is located off of Thames St right on the water at Broadway Pier (where you can catch the water taxi).  They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and have quite a large bar area.  They even have a yappy hour where they encourage you to bring your dog (outdoor seating only).  But you didn't come here to bring your dog.  You came here for crab cakes.  What did we think?  Read on to find out!

Monday nights are crab cake nights.  Sandwich is $10 and platter is $20.  Platters come with choice of 2 sides, sandwich with 1.  Entree served with lemon and tartar sauce, no offer of cocktail (although I suspect it to be available, being a seafood restaurant and all).

Crab cakes definitely contain lots of jumbo lumps of crab meat, with enough bread crumb filler to be comparable to Faidley's.  Sensing mayo and Old Bay and/or paprika in the binder.  Filler mixes well with the crab, letting the crab flavor come forward with a bit of an Old Bay and/or paprika kick afterwards.  Moist with a bready texture, but towards the drier side of moist (possibly a tad bit overcooked).  While the filler amount was noticeable, the amount of it was actually on the lower side of being an average amount.

All that said, my crab cake was potentially overcooked, the crab meat was stringy, which sometimes indicates frozen crab meat.  Not to say this was the case, as I did not confirm this with the establishment.  But fresh crab meat does not typically have a stringy texture.  Because of this, I don't think all of the potential crab flavor came through, but at least there was enough there to notice.  There is potential for this to be a very worthwhile crab cake, but for now, the stringy texture overrides the good flavor.  And for that, I had to downgrade my rating of Very Good to Good.
