Jerry's Seafood Crab Bomb
For over 25 years, Jerry's Seafood has been providing the DC area with fresh, gourmet seafood. One of the first things you notice about the menu is the number of items on the menu. As opposed to having every imaginable combination of seafood available, they instead focus on a few entrees that they feel they do right. One of these entrees is known as The Crab Bomb. One night (based on the recommendation of friend of the CSR, Akisha C.), the CCR went to take on this formidable concoction. Who won? Follow along and find out!
The Crab Bomb is a 10 oz. crab cake packed with jumbo lump crab meat, some Old Bay seasoning, and just enough mayonnaise to hold it all together. Because of the size, they are only offered broiled, otherwise they would fall apart. There are regular jumbo lump crab cakes also on the menu, which is a Crab Bomb split into two, and uses some of the smaller pieces of crab (but still only comes baked). Both the Crab Bomb and the crab cakes are offered in the original varieties, as well as the Firecracker, where the cakes are spiced with black pepper and dry mustard. Served with bread and 2 sides. Cocktail and tartar sauce do not come out by default, but are offered if you'd like. Shakers of Old Bay are at the table if you so desire.
The crab in the Bomb has a decent flavor to it, but it's not overly sweet. Due to the lack of breadcrumbs, the Bomb retains a nice amount of moisture, and the mayonnaise binder adds to this. Crab is mostly jumbo lumps with a few unavoidable broken bits. There is also a buttery flavor to the cake, which adds a certain amount of greasiness to it. In our entree, this butteriness got to be a bit too much by the end of the meal.
