Lancaster Brewing Company
What's the first thing that comes to mind when someone mentions Lancaster? That's right, you think about the Amish, who do influence a lot in the area. Which brings us to beer. What the Amish Country is known for goes into every Lancaster Brewing Company beer. Which is, according to their website: fresh country air, clean water, and rich, non-irrigated farmland. What results is incredibly fresh, quality beer made according to German purity laws. Lancaster is a bit out of the way to go for crab cakes, yet there they are on the menu. Do the same attention to quality go into their crab cakes that they put into their beers? Let's find out!
While the menus are seasonal and depend on if you go in for lunch or dinner, at the time of our visit, crab cakes were only available on the dinner menu. The broiled jumbo lump crab cakes are a double platter served with whipped potatoes, sautéed vegetables, and a spicy remoulade.
The crab cakes were made up of large lumps of crab bound together with a bread and egg based binder, with some onion and spices mixed in. The crab lumps had some flavor to them, but were a bit on the dried out side. As for the binder, bread was the biggest component, which created a binder that resembled Thanksgiving stuffing. Having chopped up onion bits in the mix didn't help with the distinction, either.
There aren't many crab cakes that we walk away from, and after 2-3 bites we had to send these back. The crab cakes were mostly binder, and what crab was in it was either dried out and not very flavorful. Spicing was light, so the most predominant flavor was the bread. While the cakes themselves were nice and moist, we hesitate to even call them crab cakes. The manager commented to us that lots of people like them, we just didn't happen to be part of that group.
Despite our opinions on their crab cakes, you shouldn't hesitate to check out the other menu items, as everything else we ordered was delicious. And try a few of their beers while you're at it!
