Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Seasons Pizza

Seasons Pizza is a regional pizza chain with over 25 stores in MD, PA, DE, and NJ, in addition to stadium locations in Philadelphia and Baltimore. Known for their consistency and dedication to a quality product, the News Journal in DE rated Season's as the best pizza for 4 years in a row. All of your pizzaria standards are on the menu, in addition to, what else, crab cakes! The menu says they are award winning, but we can never be too sure until we've tried them. Read along and find out what we thought!

Seasons Crab Cake Sandwich comes with lettuce, tomato, tartar sauce, and is served alongside fries and cole slaw. Single and double entrees are also available, which come with fries, house salad, and a roll.

The crab cake is a Maryland style cake, with some large lumps of crab, but most of the crab meat was in broken pieces, which was very sweet and flavorful. The binder consists of a lot of bread, mixed in with some egg and light spices. The bun that the sandwich comes on is huge! But better to be a larger bun than a smaller one, especially as you bite down on the sandwich so the crab cake doesn't ooze out of the sides.

While the crab meat was pretty tasty, the breading tries to take over as the predominant flavor, as the crab lumps weren't quite big enough to offset the bread. The lettuce and tomato help to smack the bread flavor down, and add a nice texture dynamic to the sandwich. As mentioned, the bun is really big, and with the amount of breading in the crab cake, it is really just too much bread in the overall product.

On the whole, the crab cake is pretty good as a sandwich, but we're not so sure if the cake can stand alone as an entree. The cake could have benefited from some additional spice, and some of the binder had a fishy flavor in a few spots, which was a bit of a downer. With the bread taking over the crab flavor, the flavor of the cake becomes a bit boring without some additional flavors, such as lemon or Old Bay.
