Sláinte
If it's the one thing you can always count on an Irish bar for, and that's for having footie on the teles at any given opportunity, in addition to a never ending supply of Guinness on draft. But what you might not expect is the cloth napkins or high end restaurant quality food. That's where Sláinte comes in. Part of a group of interconnected restaurants (Kooper's Tavern and Woody's Rum Bar) at the corner of Thames and Broadway in the heart of Fells Point, you've most likely walked past and only ever thought about the beer, but didn't notice that they were voted Best of Baltimore multiple times by the City Paper and Baltimore Magazine. Until you stop in for a pint and get hooked on their Celtic Wings or the Scotch Egg. But never mind the fish and chips, we're here for the crab cakes. Take a culinary journey with us to see how this gastropub handles our beloved crab!
Crab cakes are available as a sandwich served with lettuce, tomato, and caper remoulade on a toasted brioche bun, or as a single or double platter served with rice and vegetables. On the platter, remoulade is served on the side. If lemon is your thing, then you might want to ask for some.
While the description calls this a Maryland Crab Cake, it's certainly not Maryland style. The crab is mostly broken up, but packed tightly together with hardly any filler. Just enough mayonnaise, Dijon, bread, and egg to hold it all together, along with some spices.
This crab cake is outstanding! The crab is nice and sweet, and while the meat is broken up, it doesn't detract from the texture. The binder has a bready flavor to it, followed up by the Dijon. You get a little bit of pepper in the mix, but none of the supporting ingredients are overpowering, and are in fact perfectly balanced. The crab flavor comes through, but there is enough of a flavor profile to not let this cake get boring. If you can pull yourself away from the other tasty treats on the menu, this is a definite must try!
