The Front Page
The Front Page has witnessed a lot of events in DC since it opened up almost 25 years ago. Not so much at the restaurant, but more so in the neighborhood. Located in Dupont Circle, The Front Page was just named one of the best brunches in America by Open Table. Catering to everyone from the causal sports enthusiast to politicians and businessmen, they have something for everyone. For us, they had crab cakes. Will we find a decent crab cake in DC? Let's find out!
The Front Page offers crab cakes as an appetizer, a sandwich, and an entree. The appetizer consists of 3 fresh lump 2oz crab cakes served with Sriracha mayo and corn relish. For the sandwich, they sit a fresh jumbo lump crab cake on a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, and Cajun tartar sauce along with fries. The entree is a double platter of pan seared jumbo lump crab cakes with house-cut fries, cole slaw, and Cajun remoulade. This review is for the sandwich.
The jumbo lump in the crab cake is mostly broken up, with some small lumps amongst more broken up pieces. The crab is bound together with a base mixture of mayonnaise and bread crumbs, with some Dijon (or stone ground mustard), chopped green onion, and seafood spicing. All pan-seared to a golden brown. The mixture ratio is a bit on the even side, around 50/50 crab to binder.
For a jumbo lump crab cake, the lumps were way too broken up. If you could single a piece out, the crab did have a nice, sweet flavor to it. But you have to pick a piece out in order to taste it, as the seasoning and binder overpower the crab flavor. The binder and spicing flavors are good, and not too overpowering, but assertive enough to push the crab far into the background. Moisture levels are pretty good, and the mixture is evenly mixed in with the crab.
As a sandwich, everything works well together. The bun has a great flavor to it, and the cake holds up well between the bun. But the inability to taste the crab meat is a bit of a downer for us. We'd be even more disappointed if we had went with the entree, as this crab cake really lends itself more to being used in a sandwich. Certainly one of the better attempts we've had in DC, but not quite what we're used to in Baltimore.
