Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

The Peppermill Restaurant

The Peppermill Restaurant, located right off the beltway on York Rd. in Lutherville-Timonium, has been a local institution since they opened back in 1982. While The Peppermill has been on tour radar for a while now, it took the suggestion of Friend of the CCR, Mike A., to convince us to go. He, along with most other online reviews, warned that the clientele is made up of a mostly older crowd, but the younger generation are starting to discover what they have to offer. Will their crab cakes wow and amaze diners of all ages? Let's find out!

The availability of crab cakes will depend on if you go for lunch or dinner. Lunch offers a single crab cake platter plus one side, or a crab cake sandwich topped with lettuce and tomato, and served with chips and a pickle. Dinner offers both a single or double crab cake platter; both come with one side, but the double entree also includes a tossed salad. The menu indicates you can get your crab cakes broiled or fried, with the exception of the sandwich, which does not indicate a choice in cooking method.

What you get is a 5oz lump crab cake with fairly good sized lumps of crab meat. The binder is moist and creamy, made up of primarily mayonnaise and breadcrumbs. If there are any spices in the mix, it is very lightly spiced.

The crab meat was meaty, yet sweet. The binder had a nice, creamy texture to it that was very neutral in flavor. What we were really missing was the spice. Either it wasn't in there, or it was so light that you just couldn't taste it. While the flavor of the crab was good, when it is the only flavor, things taste kind of flat. The salt in Old Bay would really help accentuate that crab taste, and introduce another layer of flavor. Add that in, and you've got a winner. Unfortunately, based on what we were served, the effort was a bit bland, and average at best.

On a side note, even if you go there to try something other than the crab cakes, we think you'll be really impressed with the service levels. The servers know how to treat their customers, the restaurant is nicely set with white tablecloths, and your food will come out at an appropriate pace.
