Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Waterman's Pride

If it's one thing that Baltimoreans love, it's carry out seafood. Particularly, crabs. Waterman's Pride is a family business, owned and operated by local MD Waterman Captain Tony Vicari since 2006. All of the crabs are caught by Tony, ensuring the freshest crab their customers can buy. In addition to crabs, they also offer fresh quality seafood, both prepared and frozen. We were originally introduced to Waterman's Pride last summer, thanks to a Groupon for 2 dozen crabs at an outstanding price. And seeing how amazing those crabs were, we knew we had to try their crab cakes. Were they worth the wait? Read on and find out!

Waterman's Pride sells both jumbo lump and backfin crab cakes. The menus list the crab cakes as either sandwiches or as part of a platter. From carry out joints, we typically like to take ours raw and cook them ourselves at home. For this review, we ordered the jumbo lump crab cake and baked ours at 350 degrees for 12 minutes.

The jumbo lump crab cake lives up to its name, containing lots of lumps of crab with not too many broken pieces. All of that crab was held together by a binder of mayonnaise, breadcrumbs, and spices. In addition to Dijon mustard, we suspect that some crab mustard was incorporated as well.

The result was a nice, moist crab cake containing large lumps of super sweet crab. The binder has a neutral flavor that accentuates the crab meat well. The spice tends to hit on the back end, adding to the flavor complexity. There were nice layers of flavor that showcase the crab well. An outstanding crab cake that we would most definitely go back for again!
