Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Richard's Fish & Crabs

So what do you do with an old gas station? Well, if your name is Richard, you buy it and turn it into a crab shack! Although, as the name implies, they are more than just crabs. Since 2006, Richard and his son had been selling crabs and shrimp at this old gas station, since renovating the location and adding a steam room and kitchen. Richard also owns The Seafood Stop, which we had the pleasure of reviewing. So while one would assume that the crab cake recipes were the same, we here at the CCR will shy away from assumptions and do what we do best -- chow down on some crab cakes! Were they the same? Let's find out!

Ruddy Duck Brewery and Grill

If you ever go down to visit Solomon's Island from Baltimore/DC, you may notice the Ruddy Duck on your left as you head down to the island.  Far enough away from the main strip, there may be an inkling to stop in and have a bite.  If you're a beer nerd like I am, then all it takes is the word "brewery" in the name to pique your interest.

Walking in, a sandwich board in the hostess area informed me that the Ruddy Duck's crab cakes were voted the best in Southern MD.  Well, such a bold claim certainly grabbed mine.  I mean, how could I pass up a tasty crab cake after a day of taking pictures at Annmarie Garden?  Certainly not this guy.  So were they worth all the fuss?  Check it out!

Sláinte

If it's the one thing you can always count on an Irish bar for, and that's for having footie on the teles at any given opportunity, in addition to a never ending supply of Guinness on draft. But what you might not expect is the cloth napkins or high end restaurant quality food. That's where Sláinte comes in. Part of a group of interconnected restaurants (Kooper's Tavern and Woody's Rum Bar) at the corner of Thames and Broadway in the heart of Fells Point, you've most likely walked past and only ever thought about the beer, but didn't notice that they were voted Best of Baltimore multiple times by the City Paper and Baltimore Magazine. Until you stop in for a pint and get hooked on their Celtic Wings or the Scotch Egg. But never mind the fish and chips, we're here for the crab cakes. Take a culinary journey with us to see how this gastropub handles our beloved crab!

Stanford Grill

The Stanford Grill is a relatively new location in Columbia, having opened up about a year or two ago.  As they say, food is their passion, and they pride themselves on fresh, handpicked ingredients, prepared in an open-air kitchen.  Unless you've heard about it, you may not even know where this place is, seeing as how it is tucked away behind the trees.  But once you find it, you'll be greeted with great ambiance and a culinary adventure.  So how did the crab cakes turn out?  Read along and see for yourself!

Stoney Creek Inn

According to local legend (or the About page of their website), Stoney Creek Inn actually started out as Bill's Seafood Carry-out and Crabs, way back in 1998.  It wasn't until 2001 that Bill and his family opened a full service restaurant at the Inn's present location. Aside from making a point to provide quality food, they also serve Maryland crabs during the crab season. Their food is so good that Guy Fieri visited the joint in 2008 to tape Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Will their crab cakes also take us to Flavortown? Let's find out!
