Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Heavy Seas Alehouse

We're sure you are familiar with the name Heavy Seas (or rather, the Clipper City Brewing Company, its founder Hugh Sisson, or Sissons in Federal Hill). Their beer is everywhere. And, we have it on good authority, it's delicious. Open since February 2012, the Alehouse provides a comfortable space to enjoy food, friends, and of course, beer! Alehouses are typically known for their beer first, and their food second. But once you see/smell one of their monster burgers walking by, you may have to reconsider. So now that Heavy Seas is fast becoming an iconic name around Maryland for quality locally brewed beers, how do they fare with our beloved crab cakes? Read along and see if they have the booty to please the foodies!

Jack's Bistro

Jack's Bistro is located right around the corner from O'Donnell Square in Canton, and bills itself as offering innovative American cuisine.  Innovative is most certainly right!  While some menu items stick around (like the chocolate macaroni and cheese, and the burger made of nothing but bacon), others get replaced often, so there is always a reason to go back.  If you can't figure out what to have for dessert, they are known for their peanut butter and jelly shots.  So now that everyone is drooling, let's get back to our focus here -- crab cakes!  Wipe the drool on your leave, and read on to see how the experience was!

Jerry's Seafood

Jerry's Seafood has been seen on the CCR before, back in March when we reviewed their famous Crab Bomb.  But there were more tempting treats on the menu that drew us back.  In case you missed their first review, Jerry's Seafood has been serving seafood to the DC area for over 25 years.  Instead of serving everything that swims in the sea, they instead concentrate on providing quality instead of quantity.  While the Crab Bomb didn't exactly blow us away, we gave them another chance for redemption.  Was it worth a return visit?  There's only one way to find out.  Read on!

Joe Squared

Joe Squared is better known for their pizzas than their crab cakes. Featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, voted Maryland's best pizza, and named one of the best pizza places in the nation by both Food Network Magazine and Food Nation, it is certainly one place you can't miss when you visit Baltimore. Now with two locations (Power Plant Live! and North Avenue), Joe Squared is the place to go for a family friendly atmosphere, live music, and an extensive food and drink list. But pizzas are pizzas, and crab cakes are crab cakes. So how did Joe do? Read along and see for yourself!

Joe's Crab Shack

You probably know Joe's Crab Shack from the commercials you see on TV. Driving past one, it may remind you of a Bubba Gump's. More perplexing than anything else may be that this is one crab shack that you can't get steamed crabs at. Well, not like what we're used to here in Maryland. Buckets of crab legs just aren't the same as a steaming pile of crabs in the center of the table. But despite that little difference, they do have crab cakes on the menu. Are they respectable enough to be served in Maryland? Let's find out!
