Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Maryland

Fresh ingredients and creativity. A sandwich with no rules. These are all things that we can get behind, and all we have to do is pay a visit to the Vagabond Sandwich Company. Located in downtown Bel Air, the Vagabond Sandwich Company is scratch cooking their way into your bellies based on a concept from the 1940's. And they support the local farming community by offering local products for sale alongside theirs. You can find crab cakes in a few forms, although the proper crab cake is a wrap, and not a sandwich. Is that enough to make us follow the vagabond trail to their doorstep? Let's find out!

Waterfront Bistro

Continuing on with the store-bought crab cakes, today we turn our sights to the frozen seafood section of our local Safeway.  Waterfront Bistro is Safeway's new private label line of frozen seafood and sauces.  I was actually trying to find the Phillip's frozen crab cakes when I came across this package (Phillip's was no where to be found at this Safeway).  Being the inquisitive type, the Crab Cake Review decided to take one for the team and give them a shot.  Read on to see how well this experiment went.

Waterman's Pride

If it's one thing that Baltimoreans love, it's carry out seafood. Particularly, crabs. Waterman's Pride is a family business, owned and operated by local MD Waterman Captain Tony Vicari since 2006. All of the crabs are caught by Tony, ensuring the freshest crab their customers can buy. In addition to crabs, they also offer fresh quality seafood, both prepared and frozen. We were originally introduced to Waterman's Pride last summer, thanks to a Groupon for 2 dozen crabs at an outstanding price. And seeing how amazing those crabs were, we knew we had to try their crab cakes. Were they worth the wait? Read on and find out!

Annapolis has lots of small shops and restaurants that add to the quaintness of this harbor town.  And what a better way to enjoy the charm of Annapolis than by relaxing in a luxury hotel?  West Kitchen & Tavern is a "scratch" kitchen located in the Lowes hotel, offering a wide selection of delicacies celebrating the Chesapeake flavor that has made the area famous.  Using only fresh, local ingredients, they offer a wide variety of plates that you can share or keep all to yourself.  And what Chesapeake menu isn't complete without crab cakes?  Continue on to find out how they turned out!

This week the Crab Cake Review attempts to stay home and sample some of the home versions of crab cakes.  Today's victim is Whole Foods.  The world's largest retailer of organic and natural food, one would hope that their access to sustainable, locally sourced seafood would produce a crab cake worthy of recognition.  Especially with a Baltimore location.  How did it all work out?  Read on!
