Weekly reviews of crab cakes around the MD and DC area

Sherri's Crab Cakes

This past weekend was the Fell's Point Fun Festival in Baltimore, an annual event for the Fells Point Preservation Society in its 45th year.  Originally created to raise awareness of the historic neighborhood's slated destruction to make way for a highway, the festival has grown larger and larger over the years showcasing what this 18th century neighborhood has to offer.

One big draw of a street festival, aside from the free entertainment and the lure of the beer garden (especially the one serving Heavy Seas!) are the variety of food stands offering a wide variety of food.  Baltimore isn't just known for its crabs, but also for serving up some mean pit beef, Polish sausages and, if you're lucky, lake trout.  But food options aside, one food stand that had to make an appearance is Sherri's.

Sherri's Crab Cakes can be found at various festivals and shows up and down the East Coast.  They even go so far as to claim that they are the best concession crab cake sandwich.  Given that they started their business based on the fact that the festival crab cake offerings weren't very good, coupled with the fact that they had multiple stands at the festival, as well as a mail order business, they must be doing something right.  So how were these magical concession crab cakes?  Follow along and find out!

Shoreline Seafood Regular Backfin Crab Cake

Shoreline Seafood has been a local area landmark since 1981, providing fresh seafood for sale as well as food for carryout.  While the building isn't much to look at, walk inside and you'll experience an unexpected seafood market.  Everything from crabs to a wide assortment of fish to clams, mussels, and other fish you never thought you'd come face to face with. Certain items can be steamed onsite, or you can take it home and cook it yourself.  They do have steamers and seasonings available for sale, in case you decide to do some work yourself.  Carryout items cover a wide range of seafood delicacies, from sandwiches to soups to seafood salads.  On our visit, the backfin crab cake sandwich was on the lunch special board, so we decided to check it out.  How was it?  Read on and see for yourself!

Silver Spring Mining Company

The first "Mine" in the Silver Spring Mining Company started back in 1995 when the Silver Spring Inn in Perry Hall was for sale. Focusing on their service, in addition to the quality of their food and family atmosphere, the success of two hockey camp buddies grew into two more locations, in Hunt Valley and Bel Air. And while you can't go underground and dig for gold, you can go table-side and and find gold on your plate. No, not in rock form, but in crab cake form! Did we strike it rich, or end up with fool's gold?  Only one way to find out!  Dig in and read on!

Skipjack's Crab House

Skipjack's Crab House has a long history behind it, despite only being open since 2009. There was a seafood wholesaler/retailer down in Louisiana (Seaside Seafood) that would provide Louisiana crabs to a few select crab houses in the Baltimore area that started in the early 70's. Around 2003, two college buddies bought that business, and relocated the carry out to Glen Burnie, which they still operate (known as "The Carry-Out"). Skipjack's exists because they wanted to expand to the north side of Baltimore and be the go-to place for Louisiana-style seafood. While they're not featuring Maryland crabs, Louisiana crabs are often flown in during the off season and are still pretty tasty. But where their crab cakes just as delicious? Let's find out!
